St. Junípero Serra

St. Junípero Serra was a missionary priest whose life was marked by courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering desire to proclaim the Gospel.

Born Miguel José Serra in Petra on the island of Mallorca, Spain, he entered the Franciscan Order at age 16 and later became a respected scholar and teacher. Despite his academic success, he felt called to a more apostolic life and volunteered for missionary service in the Americas. Ordained a Franciscan priest, he took the name Junípero to honor a companion of St. Francis of Assisi.

Arriving in Mexico in 1749, Junípero embraced a life of hardship, traveling on foot and preaching in remote regions. A serious leg injury suffered during the journey would afflict him for the rest of his life, yet he refused to let it hinder his mission.

In 1769, he traveled north to Alta California, where he established the first of nine missions, beginning with San Diego de Alcalá. Over the next 15 years, he founded a chain of missions that stretched along the California coast, including those in Carmel, San Antonio, and San Gabriel. These missions served as centers of evangelization, agriculture, education, and community life.

Junípero’s missionary efforts were rooted in his deep faith and commitment to the dignity of every human person. He worked to defend Indigenous communities from Spanish soldier misconduct and sought to ensure their protection under Spanish law, even traveling long distances to advocate on their behalf.

Despite enduring physical suffering and many challenges, he remained steadfast in his vocation. He died on August 28, 1784, at Mission San Carlos Borromeo in Carmel, where he is buried.

Canonized by Pope Francis in 2015, St. Junípero Serra is remembered as a tireless missionary whose legacy continues to shape the spiritual and cultural history of California and the Church in the United States.

What missions did St. Junípero Serra found?

St. Junípero Serra founded the first nine of the 21 California missions during his lifetime. These include Mission San Diego de Alcalá (the first, founded in 1769), Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, Mission San Antonio de Padua, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, Mission San Francisco de Asís (also known as Mission Dolores), Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission Santa Clara de Asís, and Mission San Buenaventura. These missions formed the foundation of a network of communities that contributed significantly to the development of California’s religious, cultural, and agricultural life.

Why did St. Junípero Serra take the name Junípero?

When Miguel José Serra entered the Franciscan Order, he chose the name Junípero in honor of one of the early companions of St. Francis of Assisi, Brother Juniper, who was known for his simplicity, humility, and joyful spirit. This choice reflected Junipero’s desire to imitate the Franciscan ideals of poverty, humility, and missionary zeal. Throughout his life, he sought to embody these virtues, embracing sacrifice and dedicating himself completely to the service of God and others, especially in his missionary work among Indigenous peoples.

Where are St. Junípero Serra’s remains today?

St. Junípero Serra is buried at Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo in Carmel, California, one of the missions he personally founded and that served as headquarters for his missionary efforts. His tomb is located within the mission church and has become a place of pilgrimage for many faithful who come to honor his life and legacy. The mission itself remains an important historical and spiritual site, preserving artifacts from Serra’s life and continuing to serve as a center of Catholic worship and heritage in California.
