Patron Saint of grandparents, married couples, parents, families, those seeking to have children
Sts. Joachim and Anne are venerated as Mary’s parents and Jesus’ grandparents. Although their names are not found in the canonical Scriptures, their story has been preserved in early Christian tradition, particularly in writings such as the Protoevangelium of James. While this text is not considered authoritative, it provides context for traditional belief.
According to tradition, Joachim and Anne were a devout Jewish couple who lived in faithfulness to God but suffered the sorrow of childlessness for many years. In their culture, this was often seen as a sign of disgrace, yet they remained steadfast in prayer and trust. Their perseverance was rewarded when God blessed them with the birth of a daughter, Mary.
Recognizing the special gift they had received, Joachim and Anne consecrated Mary to God as a perpetual virgin from an early age. They raised her in a home centered on prayer, obedience, and love of the Lord, preparing her heart for the unique mission she would one day receive as the mother of the Savior. When she was of age, they took her to the priests, who betrothed her to Joseph, who would be her protector in a chaste marriage.
Their role in salvation history is essential yet seldom seen. By nurturing Mary in faith and virtue, they helped prepare the way for the Incarnation of Christ. Their lives highlight the importance of family as the first place where faith is taught and lived.
Through the centuries, the faithful have honored Sts. Joachim and Anne. Parents and grandparents continue to look to them as models in the vital role of passing on the Faith to the next generation.
The Protoevangelium of James is an early Christian writing, likely composed in the second century, which provides details about the lives of Mary’s parents and her early years. While it is not part of the canonical Scriptures, it has had a significant influence on Christian tradition and devotion. Many of the details we associate with Joachim and Anne, such as their names and their long desire for a child, come from this text. Although it is not an authoritative source, the Church recognizes its historical value in providing essential insight into the theological speculations and traditions of early Christians regarding Mary’s role in salvation history.
There are numerous churches worldwide dedicated to Joachim and Anne, some of which house their relics. One of the most notable is the Basilica of St. Anne in Jerusalem, traditionally believed to stand near the site of Mary’s birth. There are also many shrines in places such as Canada and Europe that honor St. Anne in particular, reflecting her widespread devotion. In the United States, notable sites honoring one or both saints are in Fargo, ND, and Scranton, PA. These sites serve as places of pilgrimage and prayer, especially for families seeking the intercession of Our Lady’s parents.
On the feast of St. Joachim & St. Anne, we celebrate Grandparents Day. In their honor, Fr. Leo Patalinghug cooks up something special to remind us of the special role grandparents play in our family and our lives.
