St. Carlo Acutis was the first millennial to be canonized in the Catholic Church. He is a powerful reminder that holiness is possible in every generation. A teenager who loved video games, computers, friends, and family, Carlo showed that ordinary life can become extraordinary when it is centered on Christ.
His family lived in London when he was born in 1991, and they moved to Milan, Italy, when Carlo was still an infant. He developed a deep faith from an early age. Although his Catholic parents were not involved in the regular practice of the religion, Carlo’s personal love for Jesus led him to seek a deeper relationship with God. After receiving his First Communion at age seven, he developed a special devotion to the Eucharist and began attending Mass as often as possible.
After being confirmed, he taught catechism and helped build a website for his parish. At school, Carlo was known for his kindness, generosity, and concern for those in need. He helped classmates who were struggling, defended students who were bullied, and regularly assisted the poor and homeless in Milan. At the same time, he was fascinated by computers and used his programming abilities to share the Catholic Faith.
One of Carlo’s most remarkable projects was creating an online catalog of Eucharistic miracles from around the world. He hoped the website would help people recognize the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and deepen their love for the Sacrament. His work became a resource used by Catholics around the globe.
Despite his youthful age, Carlo shared his faith with great enthusiasm and understanding. He brought his parents back to a more devoted practice of their Catholic Faith, and he converted an employee of the family household from Hinduism to Catholicism.
In 2006, Carlo was diagnosed with acute leukemia. He accepted his illness with remarkable faith, offering his pain and suffering to God for the Church. On October 12, 2006, Carlo died at the age of 15. He was beatified in 2020 and canonized in 2025.
Carlo Acutis created an online exhibition documenting Eucharistic miracles recognized throughout Church history. He spent several years gathering information and organizing the material, hoping that people would discover Christ truly Present in the Eucharist. The exhibition highlighted miracles from many countries and showed how devotion to the Real Presence of Christ has been expressed across distinct cultures and centuries. After Carlo’s death, the exhibition continued to travel to parishes and schools around the world, introducing countless people to Eucharistic devotion. Carlo is still teaching about the Faith through his Eucharistic Miracles Exhibit, which has been hosted on all five continents, visiting thousands of parishes, major international shrines, including Lourdes, Fátima, and Guadalupe, and more than one hundred university campuses in the United States alone.
After his death, Carlo Acutis was buried in Assisi, a city he loved because of his devotion to St. Francis of Assisi. His body was later transferred to the Sanctuary of the Renunciation within the Church of St. Mary Major in Assisi, where his tomb has become a place of pilgrimage for visitors from around the world. His preserved heart is kept separately in a reliquary at the Cathedral of San Rufino, also located in Assisi. His resting place reflects his deep connection to Assisi and to St. Francis’s intense love for the Eucharistic Lord.
Although Carlo Acutis was only a teenager, his joyful love for Jesus inspired many people around him to rediscover or embrace the Catholic Faith. His own mother, Antonia, has shared that Carlo’s questions about God, his devotion to the Eucharist, and his desire to attend Mass helped lead both of his parents back to a deeper practice of their Faith. Carlo also shared the Gospel through personal friendships. Rajesh Mohur was Hindu and worked for the Acutis family as Carlo’s caregiver. He witnessed Carlo’s devotion at church and his generosity to the poor, and he was moved by his kindness, simplicity, and love for Christ. Through conversations with Carlo about the Catholic Faith and the Eucharist, Rajesh eventually requested Baptism. He entered the Church in 1999.
