Tenth century B.C.–ninth century B.C.

Patron Saint of farmers, those in need of healing

St. Elisha

St. Elisha was a prophet and one of the great figures of the Old Testament, known for his powerful witness to God’s presence and his many miracles. He lived in the ninth century B.C. in the northern kingdom of Israel and was called by the prophet Elijah to continue his mission.

Elisha’s calling is described in the First Book of Kings, where Elijah finds him plowing in the field and throws his mantle over him, signifying his prophetic calling. Elisha immediately leaves behind his former life to serve God. He becomes Elijah’s devoted disciple and remains with him until Elijah is taken up into Heaven. Before this, Elisha asks for a “double portion” of Elijah’s spirit, which is granted to him.

As a prophet, Elisha carried out a ministry marked by both boldness and compassion. He performed numerous miracles that revealed God’s care for His people, including healings, multiplying food to feed people during a famine, and raising the dead.

Elisha often advised the kings of Israel, helping guide the nation during times of political and spiritual difficulty. His actions encouraged the people to trust in God.

Even after his death, Elisha’s influence continued. Scripture recounts that a man was restored to life after coming into contact with his bones, a sign of God’s enduring power working through His servant. St. Elisha is honored by Eastern and Western Christians as well as by Muslims.

What does it mean that St. Elisha received a “double portion” of Elijah’s spirit?

The “double portion” requested by Elisha refers to a share of Elijah’s prophetic authority and mission. In biblical tradition, a double portion was often associated with the inheritance given to a firstborn son. By asking for this, Elisha sought to continue Elijah’s work as his spiritual heir. Thus, Elisha performed many miracles that confirmed the power and presence of God at work through him. His request for the Holy Spirit’s empowerment was to continue Elijah’s work through prophetic ministry. The request was granted. Elisha performed twice as many recorded miracles (28) as Elijah (14), demonstrating a powerful, impactful ministry.

What are some of the most well-known miracles of St. Elisha?

Elisha performed many miracles recorded in the Books of Kings. Some of the most notable include purifying poisoned water, parting the Jordan River, multiplying a widow’s oil to save her family from starvation, feeding a large group with limited food, healing Naaman from leprosy, and raising a child from the dead. These miracles demonstrated God’s care for both individuals and the broader community, revealing His power in everyday situations. Elisha’s miracles are characterized by a focus on divine mercy and personal compassion, often providing for the immediate, practical needs of the people of Israel.

How is St. Elisha significant in salvation history?

St. Elisha played a significant role in guiding the people of Israel during a time of spiritual and political instability. As a prophet, he called the people back to fidelity to God and demonstrated divine power through his actions. His ministry continued the work of Elijah and helped prepare the way for future prophetic voices. Elisha’s life reflects God’s ongoing presence and guidance in the history of His people and emphasizes God’s saving work in daily life and the extension of salvation to Gentiles—as in the healing of Naaman’s leprosy. St. Elisha is significant in salvation history as a major Old Testament prophet who foreshadowed the ministry of Christ and the Apostles through healing, feeding, and raising the dead. Just as Elisha continued Elijah’s ministry, so the Apostles continued Christ’s ministry.
