Patron Saint of youth, students, mountaineers, World Youth Day
St. Pier Giorgio Frassati is a radiant example of holiness lived in ordinary life. Born in Turin, Italy, in 1901 to a well-known and influential family, he was raised in a culturally rich environment. Despite the comforts of his upbringing, Pier Giorgio chose a path of simplicity, faith, and generous service to others.
From an early age, he developed a devotion to the Eucharist and a deep love for the Faith. He attended daily Mass whenever possible and went to Confession weekly. This spiritual foundation strengthened his relationship with Christ and guided every aspect of his life.
Pier Giorgio was known for his vibrant personality and love of adventure, especially mountain climbing. For him, the mountains were a place to encounter God and reflect on the beauty of creation. He often invited friends to join him and encouraged other young people to seek true happiness in the purity of heart and mind rather than in the pleasures of the world.
He was also deeply involved in Catholic organizations and social action, advocating for justice and supporting the poor. He gave away much of his money and possessions to those in need. Many who knew him were not aware of his acts of charity, which were often done quietly.
His profound commitment to serving the poor and marginalized impacted many lives. He joined charitable organizations, visited the sick, and provided food, medicine, clothing, and financial assistance to those in need. His charitable work was done without recognition or knowledge, even from his closest family members.
In 1925, Pier Giorgio contracted polio while caring for the sick. He died at the age of 24. At his funeral, the thousands of poor and needy whom he had helped came to honor him, revealing the profound impact of his charity.
Pope St. John Paul II, who beatified the saint in 1990, called him a “Man of the Beatitudes” to describe his life of virtue. St. Pier Giorgio Frassati was canonized in 2025 by Pope Leo XIV.
Pier Giorgio had a deep love for the outdoors, especially mountain climbing, which he saw as both a physical and spiritual pursuit. He often organized hikes with friends, combining recreation with prayer and fellowship. For him, reaching the summit symbolized striving toward Heaven, and he famously used the phrase Verso l’alto, meaning “To the heights,” to express both his love for climbing and his desire for spiritual growth. Today, he is considered a patron and inspiration for mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Pier Giorgio was actively involved in several Catholic organizations, including the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, where he dedicated himself to serving the poor. He was also a member of Catholic Action, Third Order of St. Dominic, and the Italian Catholic Students Federation. He also participated in youth apostolates that promoted faith formation and social responsibility. Through activism in these groups, he lived out his commitment to Catholic social teaching, advocating for justice, supporting those in need, and encouraging others to grow in their faith.
St. Pier Giorgio Frassati was arrested in 1921 while participating in a protest by the Young Catholic Workers Congress in Rome. He was arrested for defending a religious banner against police during a peaceful demonstration that turned violent. The police were violently suppressing protesters. Pier Giorgio grabbed a religious banner that police had knocked down and used the pole to defend himself and others. His father’s influence would have secured his release, but he chose to stay in jail with his friends rather than accept special treatment. Beyond that specific incident, he was involved in other public protests opposing the government’s persecution of the Church. He was a vocal opponent of the dictator Mussolini and fought against Communism.
Filmed in Italy, this docudrama chronicles the life and spirituality of Pier Giorgio Frassati, an Italian activist who put his Catholic beliefs into practice to help the poor and downtrodden in his hometown of Turin.
