St. Ubald of Gubbio

Patron Saint of Gubbio, protection against sudden death, protection from demonic possession

St. Ubald of Gubbio

St. Ubald of Gubbio was born in the late eleventh century and lost his parents at an early age. He was raised by a pious uncle who provided for his education and spiritual formation.

Ordained a priest, Ubald devoted himself to reforming the clergy of his cathedral. At a time when discipline among churchmen was often lax, he grounded the community of canons under his care in discipline and sanctity. As prior of the cathedral chapter, he led by example, adopting a life modeled on the Rule of St. Augustine.

In 1129, he was named Bishop of Gubbio. While he reluctantly accepted the role, he embraced his responsibilities wholeheartedly. He assumed his episcopate during a perfect storm created by secular government, a papal schism, and threats from neighboring cities and the emperor, leading to political unrest and violent disputes among rival factions.

He worked tirelessly to bring reconciliation in Gubbio, often placing himself physically between opposing forces to prevent bloodshed. His willingness to risk his life for the love of his people helped quell discontent and made him a beloved figure.

He also defended his city during external threats, including invasions by neighboring powers and the Holy Roman Empire. Tradition holds that during an attack on the city by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa’s forces, the holy bishop met the emperor on the road, softening his heart and sparing Gubbio from destruction.

Despite the pressures of leadership, St. Ubald remained a humble pastor, attentive to the needs of the poor and the sick. When he died on May 16, 1160, the people of Gubbio mourned deeply. He was canonized in 1192 by Pope Celestine III. According to reports, he cured diseases and infirmities during his lifetime, often using the Sign of the Cross and prayer, and many miracles were attributed to his intercession after his death.

What is the Festa dei Ceri, and how is St. Ubald connected to it?

The Festa dei Ceri (Festival of the Candles), held each year on May 15 in Gubbio, is one of Italy’s oldest and most vibrant religious festivals in honor of St. Ubald. During the celebration, three massive wooden “candles,” each topped with a statue of a saint, are carried in a spirited race through the city and up Mount Ingino. The tallest and central candle bears the statue of Ubald. The festival dates back to at least the twelfth century and reflects the people of Gubbio’s deep affection for their patron saint. It combines devotion, civic pride, and centuries-old tradition. The event is more than a historical remembrance of the saint; it represents the cultural identity and spiritual roots of the people of Gubbio.

How did St. Ubald promote reform among the clergy?

As prior and later bishop, Ubald sought to strengthen the spiritual discipline of his clergy. He guided a chapter of canons to live in community under a common rule, adopting a life of poverty, discipline, and sanctity. Inspired by the Augustinian rule, he helped to restore moral integrity by patience and example rather than punishment. By fostering a shared spiritual life and clearer standards of conduct, he helped renew the Church as a model of holiness for the people in his region during a time of widespread ecclesiastical reform.

Where are St. Ubald’s relics preserved today?

Ubald’s body is preserved in the Basilica of St. Ubald (Basilica di Sant’Ubaldo) atop Mount Ingino overlooking Gubbio. During the exhumation of his body after his death in 1160, it was found to be in a state of incorruption. His body is displayed in a glass shrine above the basilica’s main altar. Pilgrims continue to visit the basilica to venerate his relics and seek his intercession. The church’s elevated location symbolizes his watchful protection over the city below. For the people of Gubbio, his presence remains both spiritual and visible, as a reminder of their beloved bishop’s enduring care.
