Born in 1895 to a devout Catholic family in El Paso, Illinois, Fulton J. Sheen was ordained a priest in 1919. In the 1930s and 40s, he hosted The Catholic Hour on radio. On Easter Sunday in 1940, he celebrated Mass in one of the world’s first televised religious programs. After being named Auxiliary Bishop of New York, he became a beloved television figure on Life is Worth Living—winning a Primetime Emmy Award in 1953. In the 1960s, he continued evangelizing through The Fulton Sheen Program and was named Bishop of Rochester in 1966.
